The Denim Tragedy in the Atoyac River

According to Conagua, two million tons of waste are thrown in the rivers of Mexico, from urban waste to industrial pollution, everything ends its journey in the rivers. In this country 77% of the water is used in the agrochemical industry, 14% another kind of industry, and 9% domestic.

This is one of the most polluted rivers in the country. Ibero University of Puebla made a study that shows some creepy statistics about the things thrown in its body. This affects more than two million people in the area, of 22 municipalities in the state.

In accordance with the investigation, at least 146 tons of organic waste, 68 tons of suspended solids, and 14 kilograms of heavy metals are thrown into it. Locals tell that they suffer from a variety of illnesses, such as leukemia and liver damage.

The main factories installed in its basin are: Volkswagen, Pemex, Skytex, Global tex, and other fabric industries like Rio Sul. In recent days, Río Sul has been caught by local reporters throwing green water near the Atoyac. This business is one of the main suppliers of clothes in the country. This is the main region of textile and fabric industries in the country, even supplying the USA and Cánada with cheap clothing, exporting more than 6 million dollars worth. Mexico is the sixth global economy in this area, as show in statistics provided by the Economy Commission. This area represents 3.3% of its annual GDP.
